K. NORTH CANAAN DELIVERED INTO ISRAEL’S HANDS (11:1–15)
When Jabin the king of Hazor heard of this, he sent messengers to Jobab the king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
and to the kings in the north in the mountain district, in the valley south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in Naphoth-dor on the west,
to the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites under Herman, in the region of Mizpah.
They marched out with all their troops, a huge army, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, and a great many horses and chariots.
All these kings met at an agreed place, and came to set up camp unitedly at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
Then the Lord said to Joshua: “Do not fear before them, for tomorrow at this time I will be he who will hand all of them over to Israel as dead men. Then you can hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”
So Joshua with all his warriors came suddenly upon them by the waters of Merom and fell on them.
And the Lord gave them into the power of Israel, who struck and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim and eastward to the valley of Mizpah. They struck them till they left none that could escape.
Joshua treated them as the Lord had said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
At that same time Joshua turned back and took Hazor and struck its king with the sword. (Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms.)
And they struck all that lived therein with the edge of the sword, applying the curse to them. Nothing that had breath was left over, and he burned Hazor with fire.
And all the cities of these kings and all the kings themselves Joshua took, and he struck them with the edge of the sword; he applied the curse to them as the Lord had given orders to his servant Moses.
However, the cities that stood on their mounds Israel did not burn, with the exception of Hazor alone; that did Joshua burn.
And all the booty of these cities and the cattle the Israelites took as spoil for themselves. But they struck all the people with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them. They left nothing that breathed.
As the Lord commanded his servant Moses so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua acted. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
The account of the conquest of Palestine by Israel under Joshua’s military leadership is brought to a conclusion with the events reported in this chapter. Ch. 9 opens with a reference to the determination of Canaan’s kings to offer united resistance against the Israelite onslaught. Ch. 10 presents the southern phase of this Canaanite coalition war.
